NTU sport societies - what's on offer?

As the Head of Sport at Fly, I would firstly like to welcome all our first years to NTU. I hope you have enjoyed freshers’ week and are looking forward to beginning your courses.

Sport/Exercise plays a huge part of our lives. It helps improve your fitness, health and wellbeing as well as your social lives, giving you the chance to build and develop relationships with other people.

Some of you may have already played a sport before you arrived at Trent, which you would get back involved with, while some of you may never have played a certain sport before but would now like to take up.

At NTU there a wide range of Sports available for everyone – regardless of your ability. Here are some of them.

American Football

One of the fastest growing sport in terms of popularity in the UK, American Football is one of the sports that NTU has to offer.

Trent’s team, ‘The Renegades’, are in Division 1 of the British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) American Football League. They have had plenty of success in recent times – Winning the Northern Division title back in 2016 and then reaching the Northern final back in 2019.

The A.F. Society hold three training sessions each week over at the University’s Clifton Campus and the new seasons begins later in the Autumn.

Cycling

NTU’s Cycling Society, was created out of the previous Mountain Bike and Road Cycling Societies at the University. As suggested by the merger, these are the types of biking available to people.

In terms of BUCS – Road Cyclists have the chance to participate in distanced time trials, hills climbs and a road races, while Three Day events take place for Mountain Bikes which includes the practise and the main race.

There are weekly sessions that goes on for Cycling, but just don’t forget your helmet!

Football

Nottingham has had a habit of producing some great Football teams in the past and NTU is continuing that trend.

The University are placed in the top twenty in the BUCS Uni Football Team Rankings. It has six teams, three of them men’s and four women’s. They have been highly successful in recent times, with the women’s first team winning their League back in the 2018/19 season.

There are also an internal University League at Trent, which gives the chance for people to set up a team with their mates – whether that would be a five-a-side, six-a-side, or even 11-a-side team.

Hockey

NTU’s Hockey Club has ten teams that play in the BUCS National Competition (five men’s and five women’s). The Men’s Hockey Sides and the Women’s First 11 have all achieved promotion to their top league at their Level in recent years.

The Hockey Club also has sides (both men and women) that plays in weekend Regional and Nottinghamshire Leagues.

Like with Football too, there is also an internal University League, which will allow you to create or even join a team.

Rowing

Wanting something new and exciting? Then Rowing maybe for you! NTU’s Boat Club can be seen training on the River Trent – around a ten-minute car journey, or half hour walk from the City Centre Campus.

The Boat Club has featured at some of the biggest Rowing Competitions in the country, including the Head of River Race, BUCS Regatta, Henley Royal Regatta and the Henley Women’s Regatta.

There are three different squads with the NTUBC: Beginners, intermediate and seniors. They have training sessions down by the Trent each week – as well as weekly social events!

Rugby Union

Rugby Union is one of the most popular social clubs that Trent has to offer. It has seven sides that compete in the BUCS League (five Men’s, two Women’s), alongside three teams that compete in the BUCS Rugby Sevens Competition.

They train at various places across the City – with the first team training at Lady Bay – the home of Nottingham Rugby Football Club.

Cheerleading

Want to join a society which compete as well as supports Trent’s Sports Team? Why not try Cheerleading!
