Movember: Fly Live and NTSU for men's mental health
This month things are getting a little hairy in Nottingham, literally! We are over one week into Movember and once again people are raising money in the name of Menâs health and growing their moustaches out to raise awareness. Whether you are doing some early Christmas shopping on Clumber Street or sitting with your meal deal in the Boots library, you surely will have noticed the winter caterpillars emerging on many menâs faces. Â
This year marks 18 years since Movemberâs inception, by two friends in a pub in Melbourne Australia. Since those humble beginnings, the movement has grown into an international effort, with 5 million Mo Bros and Mo Sisters taking part in the challenge to date.Â
This year our very own NTSU has announced theyâve partnered with Movember with the goal of raising ÂŁ15,000 for the charity in the name of mental health. Follow the link to look at their fundraising challenge and support all the societies and individuals making an effort to support these causes.
Already NTU Menâs Rugby Union have raised a whopping ÂŁ555.00, topping the leader board for the team efforts and pushing us closer towards that lofty goal.Â
Throughout Movember, the SU will also be hosting âCheck It Tuesdaysâ at all the different campuses, raising awareness of the issue of testicular cancer with students. It is THE number one cause of cancer in young men in the UK, but fortunately checking for symptoms could not be easier. To demonstrate how to spot lumps, they will have a pair of fake testicles with them at every stand. Find them at the city campus right outside the Fly Live studio on Tuesday 23rd November. Â
Whether you are running/walking the 60km challenge or hosting a âMo-mentâ to bring people together, thereâs no shortage of ways you can get involved in this yearâs fundraiser. Most importantly itâs never too late to join a team or take up the challenge individually!Â
Personally, I will be hosting a Mo-ment of my own on Fly Live, talking about my experiences with mental health. All of it will be sound tracked by a pantheon of Rock nâ Rolls greatest moustached musicians, from Freddy Mercury to Lemmy and even Prince. Keep an eye out for when the show will air on my Movember page and be sure to tune in.Â
