A History of Fly Live and Meet the Committee

A History of Fly Live

Fly Live is Nottingham Trent University’s official student radio station which broadcasts to all three of NTU’s campuses, reaching over 30,000 students daily.

As the Sound of NTU, we hope to represent all students through the music we play and the stories we cover.

If you’ve ever wanted to have your own radio show, or maybe you just want to increase your confidence Fly Live is the society to join. With the opportunity to host your own show or to create a podcast, the world is your oyster.

If presenting isn’t your thing, we have many other departments that you can get involved in with:

  • If you’re interested in social media and PR you can join our marketing department.
  • Want to be the next top news-reader or writer/journalist? Get in touch with our news team!
  • If production/tech is more your style, our technicians at Fly Live are always happy to have an extra pair of hands.
  • If there are any ideas you can’t already see, we’re always open to new segment ideas…

Regardless of whether you want to go into the radio industry or not, Fly Live is a fantastic opportunity to get involved in various sectors, whilst also looking great on your CV and building great social connections for your time at NTU and beyond.

A Brief History of Fly Live

Once known as Kick FM, Fly began in 1996 only broadcasting twice a year on FM. Since 2007 we have been on air every day of the academic year covering various events such as NTSU Elections and Varsity. In November 2013 we moved into our new studio in the heart of the Students Union here on the city campus. Within this same month we took home 5 (FIVE) Gold Student Radio Awards.

As Fly FM, we coached and launched a range of alumni’s careers, being a known-name within the radio and awards community, however we realised with the industry changing to be more digital and online, Fly FM needed to change to. Thus, in 2020 we rebranded into Fly Live as we move together into the smart speaker era.

Moving forward from this, we have built charity and working connections further. Going into 2022/23, we plan to re-vamp  and share the amazing work of previous carers (committee) getting our studio name out there!

Meet the Fly Live Committee 22/23

Fly Live has a team of people working behind the scenes to ensure the radio station runs smoothly:

STATION

Our Station Manager (Stan Crane) and Deputy Station Manager (Callum Anderson) oversee all the work that goes into Fly Live, leading all of our new initiatives from the front whilst being in control of the all important budget!

The role taken up by Programming (Olivia Gibbon) includes creating and maintaining the station’s schedule, as well as encouraging growth of on-air skills for our presenters. If any of the society are having issues our Programming team would be the point of contact.

Head of Systems (Celina Wells) and Head of Sound (Erin Varlaque) is responsible for keeping the station live on air and working at all times, guiding any station re-brands from a technical aspect.

CONTENT

With an active music team, our Head of Music (Talia Robinson), along with Music Liaison (Jack Simms), do more than create our station’s playlist! They keep us up to date with all the new trends, sounds and news within the music scene.
Additionally, the team is building on promotion for local artists, working in and around our community over the course of the year.

Head of News (Ella Beecroft) is responsible for our news reads. They train news readers on how to write their scripts and plan interviews; monitoring all major and localised news ranging from sport to entertainment and political coverage.

Our Head and Deputy Head of Sport (Charlie Stubbs and Nathan Abrahams) cover Nottingham Varsity and any major NTU/local sport event.
All of these events are alongside hosting the regular Sports Talk Tuesday, which sees a range of our members act as special guests/co-hosts.

SOCIALS

Our Social Sec (Olly Burns) organises our social events, such as Ocean Wednesdays and our sober socials. They are also responsible for the welfare of our members and if any are struggling our social sec is who they can talk to.

The committee collaborates over our social media presence, building a loyal following across our platforms and launching new interactive shows. (Eg. The Big O Show)

Over the coming year we are arranging a variety of sponsorship and partnerships with the station, gaining recognition around the Nottingham area and across the NTU campuses.
