Album review: Alessia Cara – Broken Hearts
Album review: Alessia Cara - Broken Hearts
Alessia Cara’s new album ‘Broken Heart’ is full of a sort of reminiscence and nostalgia that mimics some of her older works.
‘Box in The Ocean’ is one of the best tracks on the album, it is catchy and so obviously Alessia Cara.
With lyrics such as “I don’t think I could live up to the mother that my mother was” and “and I might be too much for everyone”, Cara does what she does best.
She creates a relatable song that evokes a plethora of emotions as she makes you feel seen, and maybe a little bit sad.
After all, she’s rich and famous and she still feels like this.
Celebrities can be put on a pedestal, but these songs help to break that down and show the listener that they’re human and normal and feel the same way you do.
It’s reassuring to hear her sing her doubts. Who hasn’t felt like they weren’t enough or were too much at one point or another?
‘Middle Ground’ featuring CHIKA and ‘You Let Me Down’ are other examples of her ability to prove that fame doesn’t equal deification.
‘You Let Me Down’ is like a final letter to someone you’ve drifted from as she sings about how she loves them, but they let her down.
They have small talk, but never properly talk.
Drifting from someone is painful, especially when the reason can never be fully communicated.
Yet, the lyrics and actual song are a juxtaposition, with the tune another upbeat and catchy one and the lyrics something you can interpret as somewhat painful.
‘Middle Ground’ talks of being indecisive, another painfully human experience.
Again, Cara has this uncanny ability to create some of my favourite songs while simultaneously humanising herself through her lyrics.
She writes about what everyone experiences, and I think that might be a huge part of her charm.
She seems normal.
She’s reassuring you that what you feel is okay, everyone feels like that or goes through that.
That’s what it is to be human.
Her album, although probably has faults, is lyrically gorgeous, with song after song showcasing her emotions and little parts of her life so perfectly.
