A History of Fly Live
Fly Live is Nottingham Trent University’s official student radio station, broadcasting across all three NTU campuses and connecting with over 30,000 students every day.
As The Sound of NTU, we’re here to represent the full spectrum of student life — through the music we play, the stories we tell, and the voices we amplify.
If you’ve ever wanted your own radio show, want to boost your confidence, or you just feel like trying something new, Fly Live is the perfect place to start. Host your own show, create a podcast, experiment with creative formats — and we’ll help you every step of the way.
And presenting isn’t the only path. We have a range of departments you can get involved in:
- Marketing — Perfect for anyone interested in social media, branding or digital PR.
- News — Want to try news reading, journalism or interviewing? Join the team that keeps campus informed.
- Production & Tech — If behind-the-scenes magic is your thing, our tech team is always excited to welcome new hands.
- Creative Ideas — Got a segment idea you don’t see yet? Pitch it. We love fresh voices and new perspectives.
You don’t need radio experience, and you don’t need to be chasing a career in the industry. Fly Live is simply an incredible place to learn, grow, make friends and build real skills — all while doing something genuinely fun. It looks great on your CV, but even better for your time at NTU and beyond.
Whether you want to broadcast, podcast, produce, create or just be part of something exciting, Fly Live is ready for you.
A Brief History of Fly Live
Once known as Kick FM, Fly began in 1996 only broadcasting twice a year on FM. Since 2007 we have been on air every day of the academic year covering various events such as NTSU Elections and Varsity. In November 2013 we moved into our new studio in the heart of the Students Union here on the city campus. Within this same month we took home 5 (FIVE) Gold Student Radio Awards.
As Fly FM, we coached and launched a range of alumni’s careers, being a known-name within the radio and awards community, however we realised with the industry changing to be more digital and online, Fly FM needed to change to. Thus, in 2020 we rebranded into Fly Live as we move together into the smart speaker era.
Moving forward from this, we have built charity and working connections further. Going into 2025/26, we plan to re-vamp and share the amazing work of previous carers (committee) getting our studio name out there!
Meet the Fly Live Committee 25/26
Fly Live is powered by a dedicated team of students who keep the station running, buzzing and evolving. Together, they make sure Fly Live stays energetic, inclusive, and always on the pulse of campus culture.
STATION
Our Station Manager, Lucy O’Neil, and Deputy Station Manager, Frankie Hill, lead Fly Live from the front. They keep our big ideas moving, look after the all-important budget, and shape the station schedule that keeps our shows fresh and exciting. They also support our presenters as they grow their confidence and on-air skills — because Fly Live is all about helping student voices take flight.
Our Head of Systems, Daphne Harris, is the person who makes sure Fly Live stays live. Daphne oversees the technical side of the station, keeps everything running smoothly, and supports any station rebrands or upgrades. If the signal’s strong and the tech feels seamless, it’s all thanks to her.
CONTENT
Our Head of Music, Talia Robinson, and Music Liaison, Millie Curran-Manning, do far more than curate a playlist. They bring the latest sounds, trends and underground gems straight to Fly Live, making sure the station stays vibrant and culturally connected. They also champion local artists and work closely with the Nottingham community throughout the year.
Our Head of News, Brandon Perfect, oversees all news content on air. Brandon trains our newsreaders in scriptwriting, interviewing and editing, ensuring we cover everything from campus stories to national headlines, including sport, entertainment and politics. Their work keeps Fly Live informed, reliable and relevant.
Our Head and Deputy Head of Sport, Isabel Clark and Lilly-Belle Hudson, bring all things NTU sport to life. From Nottingham Varsity to key student events, they keep listeners updated and engaged. They also host our weekly Sports Talk Monday — a lively space where members jump in as guests and co-hosts to talk all things sports.
SOCIAL
Our Social Sec, Isabele Siegle, plans the events that bring our community together — from Ocean Wednesdays to sober socials and everything in between. She also supports the wellbeing of our members, offering a friendly space to talk whenever someone needs it. Fly Live is a community first and foremost, and she helps make sure it feels that way.
Our Head of Marketing, Elias Woolfe, shapes how Fly Live shows up online. He builds our social presence, promotes our biggest shows and live events, and champions our members across every platform. If Fly Live feels bold, fun and full of personality, he’s one of the reasons why.
Over the coming year we are arranging a variety of sponsorship and partnerships with the station, gaining recognition around the Nottingham area and across the NTU campuses.
