Review: Marvin’s Revenge Takes Over The Level
On Saturday, October 18th, Nottingham’s The Level became the beating heart of the city’s underground scene as Marvin’s Revenge delivered a night that far exceeded anyone’s expectations. What was initially billed as a modest local gig unfolded into a sprawling celebration of modern alternative rock, featuring five diverse opening acts that highlighted the chaotic creativity pulsing through today’s grassroots music culture.
Before the show, speaking with the Derby-born, NTU-alumni trio revealed just how intertwined their personal histories are with their musical journey. Bound together by years of shared experiences, from teenage rehearsals to messy student nights out, they carry a brotherhood that radiates both pride and nostalgia. As current students ourselves, their excitement for returning “home” to Nottingham felt infectious, offering a glimpse into the sentimentality we hope to develop during our own years here.

Marvin’s Revenge have carved out a uniquely raw sonic identity, and they’re more than occupying their own niche. They spoke candidly about the intimacy of their UK shows compared with the overwhelming chaos of their recent New York performance. For them, playing close to home fosters a sense of belonging, an emotional closeness that international stages simply can’t replicate. Yet they also addressed the harsh realities of sustaining a band in today’s industry, grimacing at the mention of Spotify and other corporate giants whose practices often exploit small independent artists. With touring increasingly expensive, the band now relies on crowdfunding, merchandise sales, and the unwavering support of family and friends to keep their creative momentum alive.

Their deep connection with fans was unmistakable on the night. The audience wasn’t just there to hear music, they were there to feel it. Some absorbed every riff and lyric with quiet intensity, while others let loose, moshing and dancing with spirited abandon. Fellow musicians in the crowd listened with an analytical appreciation, while students and locals embraced the communal thrill of live music. This blend of attentiveness and energy created a rare atmosphere where every kind of listener felt at home.
Fans leaving the venue were buzzing! One young attendee described the band as “phenomenal” and described how the “crowd was very active.” Another praised the night’s energy, adding, “I would definitely come again”. When asked for advice for future concert goers, a fan simply said, “Buy tickets at the door, it’s cheap and easy”, before summing up the night as “I am lost for words.”
Ultimately, the show was a powerful reminder of how intimacy, connection, and community shape live music experiences. In a stadium full of strangers, the night’s heart and vibrancy might have been lost. At The Level, however, Marvin’s Revenge created something unforgettable—an experience we hope every student and local gets to share during their time in Nottingham.
