Fun facts about Nottingham’s supernatural and oldest pub
The pub is the perfect place to visit for a Halloween bar crawl or just a casual pub visit.
A fun fact about Nottingham is that the heart of the city is home to possibly the oldest inn in England which is named Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem.
Recently, our writer Jordon Tate took a trip to the famous inn for a meal with a friend who was visiting Nottingham for the first time.
We decided to order some food and just spend time together. I ordered chicken kiev with chips that had pub spices on them. I have to admit the chips were brilliant and I could sit and eat those all day – however, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the kiev.
A fun fact about Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem that drew me towards visiting it was that it is claimed to be the oldest pub in England. It has been around since at least 1189 and the pub claims it was “christened when King Richard the Lionheart and his men congregated here before embarking on the Crusades in Jerusalem”.
There are also some supernatural legends about the pub including ghosts, a chair that will get you pregnant if you sit in it and of course, the famous cursed galleon. When I first moved to Nottingham, I was told about the cursed galleon and ever since then, I have been obsessed with it and it felt surreal when I finally got to see it in person. Legend has it that any person who cleans or even just touches the model galleon has died within 12 months. This is why it looks like it has been covered in about 50 years of dust as nobody will touch it (also why it’s inside a glass box).
Visiting the pub was a really fun experience and I do recommend the visit even if you want to have some pub grub and a pint. It was quite busy and there weren’t many places left to sit so I would recommend booking a table before visiting. Also, be wary of the quite eerie feeling when you are sitting there as it did feel like somebody was watching us (or maybe I am just heavily superstitious).
