Review: Sports Team gig at Rock City
Sports Team showed us what we have all missed so dearly over the last 18 months with an electric performance at Nottingham’s famous Rock City last Sunday (26th September.)ย
Sports Team have jumped at the opportunity to return to live music, and have always been open about their love for a crowd. Having played on the mainstage at Reading festival this year, they are now touring the country playing in London, Manchester, Leeds, and more.ย
The band were headlining Nottingham’s Dot to Dot fest which saw packed out crowds at some of the city’s biggest venues. It is no secret that indoor venues have suffered hugely due to the pandemic, but any questions over crowd numbers on the return from covid were answered emphatically over the weekend’s events.ย
With songs about motorways and everyone’s favourite MTV star, Ashton Kutcher; Sports Team have never been afraid of abnormality. Infact, it may be this very attraction to the abnormal that has thrust them to the very top of the indie scene.ย
Their fearless approach to originality and infectious stage presence has led to a cult following with every crowd larger than the last. Frontman Alex Rice consistently shows us how to engage a crowd with his antics, and (double jointed) anklesโฆ
Never afraid to break the rules, a Sports Team gig is guaranteed to entertain. From questionable dancing to crowd surfing, the band offers something new every time. Some things however, are certain; passionate vocals, powerful riffs, and a unique sound filled with elements from all six of the band’s members – they will keep you coming back for more.
The band played a collection of their biggest hits and newest releases in a shortened set – including M5, Stanton, and many from their No.2 UK and Mercury Prize nominated album, Deep Down Happy.ย
If you missed the show, or you’re just hungry for more eccentric indie action, Sports Team will be back at Rock City on November 17th from 7pm.ย
